Anthropic Folds Claude Cowork Into Claude, Adds Background Task Handoff

Anthropic announced on 16 September that Claude Cowork and standard chat are merging into one Claude. In the company's words, a user can now bring a quick question or hand over a report due at noon, and Claude "takes it from there, even after you've closed your laptop".

The change rolls out first to Pro and Max plan subscribers, in the Claude app on web, desktop and mobile, over the coming weeks, for both existing and new users on those plans. Nothing needs to be switched on. Team and Free plans will follow, and Anthropic says Enterprise administrators will be notified at least 30 days before anything changes for their organisations.

What changes

The separate Cowork mode disappears. Chat used to handle short exchanges while Cowork ran longer, multi-step jobs. Anthropic says users found deciding where a task belonged the least pleasant part of the split, and work started in one mode did not carry over into the other. Now Claude works out what a request needs on its own, and Cowork's capabilities are available from any conversation, with the context, skills and connectors already attached to the account.

Alongside the merge, Anthropic introduced Claude Docs and Claude Slides in beta on paid plans, and made Claude Design available inside ordinary conversations. Documents and presentations live at a single shareable link and can be exported as PowerPoint or PDF. Enterprise admins choose when to turn the new tools on.

Tasks that survive a closed laptop

Anthropic illustrates the persistence feature with a weekly report due at noon: a user asks Claude what moved in the pipeline, requests the usual format and five slides for the leadership meeting, then checks progress from a phone on the way to the office. The job can be scheduled for every Monday, and Claude starts it without being asked again.

By default, Claude asks before taking an action. Users who want fewer interruptions can let it keep working and check in only when something needs a closer look; Anthropic states that the user keeps the final say.

An agent, and open questions

Simon Willison, who covered the announcement, reads the move as Claude becoming a general agent in its own right, and points to the echo with OpenAI, which recently renamed its Codex desktop app to ChatGPT. Willison also notes he had been increasingly confused at Cowork v.s. Claude v.s. Claude Code, and expects that mapping the real boundaries between features and surfaces will take further work.

The change is a product consolidation, not a new model. Anthropic has not published, in the material covered here, which tasks can survive a closed laptop session, how long they run, or what happens to output if a task fails while unattended. No pricing changes were announced.
