Anthropic Releases Message Threads Beta for Claude Platform
Anthropic released Message Threads as a public beta for Claude, cutting time to first token by about 35 percent for long conversations without changing token usage.
Anthropic has released Message Threads as a public beta on its Claude platform. The feature changes how conversation history is sent in API requests, transmitting only what has changed since the last message. Anthropic says this cuts time to first token by about 35 percent for requests between 500,000 and one million tokens.
How requests change
Until now, every API request had to resend the entire conversation history. With Message Threads, only the changed content is transmitted, while Claude still reads the full conversation history. Token usage does not change as a result.
Best use cases
Anthropic says coding agents, computer-use agents, and workflows that process large numbers of documents or images benefit the most. The thread remains encrypted in memory between requests and expires after five minutes of inactivity.
Availability
The feature works on the Claude platform and through AWS, Microsoft Foundry, and Google Cloud. Further details are available in the documentation.
