The Open Group Lists Certified UNIX Products in Official Register
The Open Group's register lists products certified as fully compliant with the Single UNIX Specification. Only certified systems may use the UNIX trademark, giving buyers a vendor-neutral benchmark for portability.
What UNIX Certification Means
The Open Group maintains the official register of UNIX certified products as part of its Open Brand program. UNIX certification provides a vendor-neutral, highly regarded and global benchmark for identifying open operating systems. Only systems that are fully compliant and certified according to the Single UNIX Specification are qualified to use the UNIX trademark.
According to the register, The Open Group's UNIX standards offer what it describes as the most stable, portable and cost-effective applications development environment for a wide range of platforms, from mobile devices to mainframes.
Benefits for Developers and Users
For application developers, certification guarantees consistency of services and behavior amongst UNIX operating system implementations, along with improved portability, backward-compatibility and faster development through the increased number of standard interfaces. The Open Group states that more innovation is possible because less time is spent porting applications.
For end-user enterprises, procuring certified UNIX systems ensures the highest level of availability, scalability and maintainability. The certification follows an evolutionary approach that protects investment in existing systems, data and applications, and the availability of UNIX systems from multiple suppliers gives users freedom of choice rather than being locked in to a single supplier. The organization adds that certification enables buyers to specify UNIX conformance in procurements and facilitates Boundaryless Information Flow.
Certified Products on the Register
The register can be filtered by standard, including UNIX V7, UNIX 03, UNIX 98 and UNIX 95. Among the listed products is IBM z/OS 3.1 or later, configured with the z/OS 3.1 or later Security Server and the z/OS 3.1 or later C/C++ Compiler on IBM Series processors supporting that version, as well as z/OS V2R1 or later with the corresponding Security Server and compiler on IBM zSeries processors.
IBM AIX entries include AIX version 7 at 7.2 TL5 or later, and at either 7.1 TL5 or later or 7.2 TL2 or later, on systems using CHRP system architecture with POWER processors, along with AIX 6 Operating System V6.1.2 with SP1 or later and AIX 5L for POWER V5.3 dated 7-2006 or later.
Hewlett Packard Enterprise lists HP-UX 11i V3 Release B.11.31 or later on HP Integrity Servers. The SCO Group lists UnixWare 7.1.3 and later for single and multiprocessor systems based on IA-32 and compatible processors conforming to PC architecture, and SCO OpenServer Release 5 and OpenServer Release 6 on single and multiprocessor Intel architecture platforms.
