Delta: Zed's multiplayer environment for coding with agents

A multiplayer environment built on DeltaDB

Zed Industries introduced Delta on August 12 and started sending the first private beta invites, with more users to follow over the coming weeks. Delta is described as a multiplayer environment for coding with agents and reviewing what they build: code and conversations stay connected so developers and agents work with the full context of how the code came to be.

The product is built on DeltaDB, a database that replicates the conversation and the worktree together, in real time, for everyone in a thread. It works with the git repository a team already has: every edit and conversation is captured between commits, so developers can commit and push as they always did, and teammates who never open Delta still see a normal git repo.

Review where the work happened

On commit-based platforms, comments attach to snapshots and fall out of date as soon as the code changes. In Delta, teams can comment on anything — the conversation or any line of the worktree, whether an agent touched it yesterday or a human wrote it three years ago. Comments stay anchored to the code as it evolves and stay connected to the conversations that produced it, and the agent sits in the same thread, working from the same original decisions.

Threads are private until shared. Invited teammates join as first-class participants, and each gets their own copy of the code on a local machine, kept in sync in real time. When work moves to a cloud runner, the agent keeps going after the laptop is closed.

Delta everywhere, and why it is a new application

Any thread can be shared with a link and opened in a browser without installing anything. The team says delta.dev is not a JavaScript reimplementation but the same Rust application compiled to WebAssembly and rendered through WebGL. Delta also connects to third-party agent harnesses, starting with Claude Code, so terminal sessions sync live into a thread.

The interface is pitched against tools that hide agent output by collapsing diffs and truncating transcripts: in Delta diffs open in full, transcripts stay whole, and the conversation itself is a document that can be commented on anywhere, down to a step in a plan or a thinking block.

Zed says it could have added DeltaDB to its editor, and eventually will, but building it into a tool with hundreds of thousands of daily users would have disrupted the workflows they rely on. Delta is where the new primitives ship first.
