GrapheneOS says first devices with official support are expected in 2027

Flagships first, in 2027

Answering a user's question on Mastodon, the GrapheneOS project said the initial devices with GrapheneOS support should be available in 2027. Those first devices will be flagships, which means higher-end hardware than Google's Pixel line — and a higher price.

The project currently publishes official builds for supported Pixel devices, so the plan described in the post points towards hardware from other vendors.

Why cheaper devices need more time

Lower-end devices will take longer to meet the project's requirements because their updates and security features are not as good, the post says, and that is mostly down to how Qualcomm handles the subject. According to GrapheneOS, the latest Snapdragon flagships have the best security features.

The project adds that Motorola would also need to start paying Qualcomm for longer update support on models below its flagships.

What it means for users

A device with official support needs more than a port of the operating system: the hardware and firmware have to satisfy the project's strict privacy and security requirements, and long-term update support has to be in place. Dependence on a single vendor has been one of the project's main constraints, which is why additional partners matter to it.

GrapheneOS did not name the manufacturer, models or prices, and gave no exact launch date beyond the 2027 timeframe and the note that the beginning will be flagships only.
