Elon Musk Says Neuralink Blindsight Is Ready Pending Regulatory Approval
Elon Musk says Neuralink’s Blindsight is ready from an engineering standpoint and is waiting on regulatory approval, promising sight for people who are completely blind or have never seen.
Elon Musk said Neuralink’s second product, Blindsight, is ready from an engineering standpoint and is waiting on regulatory approval. He said it will enable even people who are completely blind or have never seen to see. The update follows Neuralink’s work on brain-computer interfaces, including a first product called Telepathy.
What Blindsight is meant to do
Blindsight aims to create an artificial visual pathway. A patient would use a camera to capture visual images, then convert the signals into something the brain can understand via a brain-computer interface. Unlike many current technologies that focus on the brain sending signals to control external machines, Blindsight would send visual information into the brain. Cochlear implants and sensory neuroprosthetics already send signals from sensors into the brain, allowing deaf patients to hear again and patients to regain the ability to feel through touch. These medical advancements could help people with limited movement or those who have lost the ability to move their bodies regain independence, because they could use a brain-computer interface to control machines with their thoughts.
Neuralink’s broader BCI plans
Neuralink was founded in 2016 and did not begin human trials until 2024. Its progress started small, with the first implantee moving a mouse cursor just by thinking. Patients are now able to play World of Warcraft through a Neuralink brain implant. Musk has described a first product called Telepathy on X. He wrote that it enables high-speed communication with computers or humans simply by thinking, and that output bandwidth will vastly exceed the fastest human speed or typing in a few years. Musk also posted the Blindsight update on X on October 30, 2026. Neuralink is one of the more successful brain-computer interface companies, partially because of Musk’s financial backing. Other companies are working on similar technologies. Meta is developing a non-invasive magnetoencephalography scanner that lets users turn thoughts into keypresses, while NeuroXess, founded in 2021, is accelerating toward human trials this year.
Wider implications
Blindsight’s medical goals could help people regain independence. Musk’s mention that the technology could enable high-speed communication with humans simply by thinking could also mean more than helping people regain mobility. Beijing announced last year that brain-computer interface technology is a nationally strategic sector. With the renewed arms race between the East and West in drones, lasers, and new technologies, it is not far-fetched that someone, somewhere, has thought of using brain-computer interfaces to create super soldiers.
