Microsoft's Excel Canvas turns workbook data into self-refreshing Copilot reports

Microsoft has announced Excel Canvas, a Copilot capability that turns workbook data into a report combining visualizations, metrics and insights, refreshed automatically as the data changes. It rolls out worldwide from mid-October 2026.

Microsoft has announced Excel Canvas, a new Copilot capability for Excel that turns workbook data into a polished report of visualizations, metrics and insights. The reports refresh automatically as the underlying data changes, and users can refine them by interacting with Copilot in natural language. The Microsoft 365 Message Center notice MC1485411 sets the rollout: general availability worldwide begins in mid-October 2026 and is expected to complete by the end of the month.

What Excel Canvas does

Per the message center entry, users will be able to generate an interactive, Copilot-created report from workbook data. Reports combine key visualizations, metrics and insights in a single view and update automatically when the data changes. Users edit them by typing requests to Copilot rather than adjusting charts by hand.

Much of this builds on what Copilot in Excel already does: Microsoft's documentation says the assistant can create charts and PivotTables and highlight, sort and filter data. Canvas keeps the output in one dashboard-style view tied to the source workbook instead of charts scattered across worksheets. It will be available on Excel for Windows and Excel Online; Excel for Mac, iPad and mobile are not part of the announcement.

Timing, platforms and requirements

The feature first surfaced as roadmap item 569424, published on September 1, 2026 and marked "In development" with a September 2026 target; the date has moved. The Register reported the plan as rolling Canvas out through October. The feature is for users with access to Copilot in Excel, and Microsoft says administrators need to take no action to prepare.

An uneven track record

The Register put Canvas in the context of earlier Copilot changes to Excel that met resistance or were withdrawn. Earlier this year, users complained about the floating Copilot Dynamic Action Button, and Microsoft soon let them move it to the toolbar. In August, the company abandoned the COPILOT() worksheet function barely 12 months after introducing it, saying it had decided not to move forward with the feature. The Register notes the retired function carried a warning that its output should be checked for accuracy, particularly for business decisions and reports, which is exactly what Canvas reports are for.

Canvas also enters a crowded market: businesses already using dashboard tools will need a reason to add another, and organizations with established Power BI setups are unlikely to move formal reporting to it. Its likelier users are the many people whose reporting already lives in Excel, where a refreshing report can save repetitive formatting work, provided Copilot picks the right metrics and charts. A wrong metric will keep showing up with every refresh, so the numbers still need a check before a report goes out.
