Google to Buy Half the Power of a Finnish Nuclear Plant in €13bn AI Push

Google to Buy Half the Power of a Finnish Nuclear Plant in €13bn AI Push

Google will buy half the electricity from Finland's Loviisa nuclear plant under a long-term deal with Fortum, part of a €13bn investment in the country — its largest single investment in Europe.

What happened

Google will buy half the electricity generated by Finland's Loviisa nuclear power plant under a long-term agreement with the national energy company Fortum, as part of a €13 billion investment in the country — its largest single investment in Europe to date.

The plant already produces around 10% of Finland's electricity. Google's commitment gives Fortum long-term financial certainty and supports a programme to extend the station's operating life and increase its generating capacity.

Why it matters

AI data centres are extremely power-hungry, and tech giants are increasingly signing direct nuclear contracts to secure stable, low-carbon baseload electricity. Finland's cheap, reliable and largely carbon-free grid was a decisive factor in Google's choice.

The bigger picture

The deal shows how AI competition is shifting from chips to energy: as model training and inference scale up, access to dependable power is becoming a strategic asset — and northern Europe is becoming one of its biggest beneficiaries.
