Google's Gemini changes will narrow free and AI Plus model access
Google will limit free personal-account users to Flash-Lite in October 2026, while AI Plus subscribers will retain Flash but lose Pro. Access to all three models requires AI Pro or AI Ultra.
Free Gemini access narrows in October
Starting in October 2026, Google will restrict Gemini model access for personal account users. People without a subscription will be limited to Flash-Lite, the smallest model in the lineup. The more powerful Flash and Pro models will not be included.
The change will reduce the current free tier, which provides access to 3.6 Flash and varying access to 3.1 Pro.
Google's subscription tiers
Google's support table lists Flash-Lite and Flash for the $4.99 per month AI Plus plan, but Pro is unavailable. People with no plan receive only Flash-Lite. Access to Flash-Lite, Flash and Pro requires either the $19.99 per month AI Pro plan or an AI Ultra plan.
AI Ultra is listed at $99.99 or $199.99 per month. The source says the arrangement mirrors OpenAI's freemium model for ChatGPT.
Limited impact is expected
The source expects the real-world impact to be small. It says most casual Google AI users may not know which model they are using, while power users represent only a few percent of the total user base and are likely to have subscriptions already.
Google may also be preparing for the larger Gemini 4 Argon model, which could be more expensive to operate. That possibility remains speculation rather than a confirmed explanation for the tier changes.
