Google will support ChromeOS until 2034 as it shifts to Googlebook OS

Google will keep issuing ChromeOS updates and security patches until mid-2034, according to a support page aimed at enterprise and education users. The details landed shortly before the first Googlebooks reach buyers on October 4, as the company moves its laptops to an Android-based operating system.

Support runs through mid-2034

The document states that ChromeOS devices will continue to receive regular updates and security patches through mid-2034. Existing Chromebooks remain available for school and enterprise deployments, and active ChromeOS Enterprise Upgrade and Education Upgrade plans on current hardware keep their management capabilities.

Google has promised Chromebook buyers ten years of support, which raised a practical question for anyone who bought a machine recently: what happens to that pledge once the platform moves on? Engadget asked Google whether the same timeline applies to the consumer version of ChromeOS.

Some Chromebooks can move to Googlebook OS

The same page says that "many of our newest Chromebook devices will be eligible to transition over to Googlebook OS", with migration paths and device eligibility to be shared soon.

A separate note explains the condition: "For qualifying devices purchased today whose 10-year support lifecycle extends beyond 2034, Google is committed to supporting your transition to Googlebook OS, with many devices offering direct migration paths."

Coverage of the announcement noted that the 2034 date had previously surfaced in a court case as the point when Google would phase out ChromeOS, and that the company still calls itself committed to web developers even as Android apps gain prominence on its new laptops.

Management tools arrive in 2027

For IT administrators, Google plans to roll out the first Googlebook OS device management features for enterprise and education users in the second half of 2027; a comprehensive management experience for Googlebooks will start reaching users around then. Until it ships, the current ChromeOS management tooling stays in place.

Googlebooks were announced around this year's I/O developer conference, and the laptops were shown off last week as pre-orders opened on September 21. The first models go on sale on October 4.
