Google Workspace warns Firefox users to switch to Chrome

Google Workspace has begun showing Firefox users a warning that they must switch to Chrome, according to a report published on the blog tales.fromprod.com on June 18. The warning appeared for a Google Workspace Business Plus account, on an up-to-date browser and operating system. At the time of writing, access from Firefox still worked, but the author notes there is no way to tell how long that will last.

What the warning says

The notice, served from a page at access.workspace.google.com/remediate, tells the user they may soon lose access to their account and asks them to secure the device for safe app access. It states that to keep data secure the device must meet the organisation's security requirements, and lists a single next step: download the Chrome browser and sign in with the work account. The post includes a screenshot of that screen, and the author stresses that the account, browser and operating system were all fully updated.

No useful answer from support

The author contacted Google support and describes the outcome as useless: the request was repeatedly transferred between agents and took a long time without producing an explanation. In his account, nothing in the message explains which security requirement Firefox fails to satisfy.

Why it matters

The author works on a team that must verify its software runs correctly in multiple browsers, and says he prefers Firefox and does not want to be pushed to Chrome without a discernible benefit. The report is a single user account rather than an official Google announcement, so the scope of the warning is unclear. Still, for organisations that standardise on Workspace, a browser restriction would affect which tools employees can use and how browser diversity is maintained on corporate devices.
