GrapheneOS has been ported to Android 17, official releases coming soon

GrapheneOS, the hardened Android-based operating system built around privacy and security, has been fully ported to Android 17 on the day Google officially released the new version of its mobile platform. The project's team says the code is now being pushed to its public repositories, with the first Android 17 release scheduled for tomorrow.

What the team announced

In a post on the official GrapheneOS discussion forum, the developers said they are building a final official release based on Android 16 QPR2 today, and will follow it with an initial Android 17 release the next day. The port has already been built and tested on the Pixel 6a, Pixel 7, Pixel 7a, Pixel 8, Pixel 10a, Pixel 10 and Pixel 10 Pro Fold.

The team stressed that the Android 17 port covers all supported devices — the short list simply reflects the hardware that has been built and tested so far. Once the code push is complete, users will be able to compile and test the new version themselves, and public testing of official releases is set to begin tomorrow.

Why it matters

GrapheneOS is known for shipping its hardened builds quickly after Google's monthly and annual Android updates, because its security model depends on staying close to the upstream AOSP code base. A port ready on release day means users of the privacy-focused system are not left waiting through a long gap in security patches.

Open questions

Community members in the thread asked whether older devices such as the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro will receive Android 17 at all, noting that Google's own announcement was not specific about the older Pixels. Others asked for a list of differences between the current release and the upcoming one. The maintainers did not answer those questions in the thread, and other participants argued that finishing the release is a better use of developer time than answering questions about it.
