GrapheneOS fixes Android 17 QPR1 Pixel regression

GrapheneOS has fixed an Android 17 QPR1 Pixel kernel regression that caused stuttering, lag and freezes under memory pressure, while Google has yet to ship a fix for affected Pixel devices.

Pixel update regression

GrapheneOS Android 17 QPR1 was released for Pixels on September 15, but the build included a regression in the Pixel kernel driver tree. The problem can cause stuttering, lag and complete freezes under memory pressure. In severe cases, processes are being killed because of stalls.

GrapheneOS said the issue also affected its own build because it had updated the firmware and drivers. The project fixed the problem in its release on the day of its statement. It remains unclear when Google will correct the regression, and GrapheneOS said a wait until December 2026 would not be surprising.

Google update delays

GrapheneOS criticized delays in standard Android and Pixel updates, which can take two to three months for severe regressions and security issues. Google often resolves problems within days, but the company said its release engineering and testing process is broken and prevents fixes from being shipped.

Major releases, including Android 17 QPR1, go through a long public testing period. Google typically needs at least four to six weeks to ship fixes for even the most severe issues. According to GrapheneOS, Google either cancelled the Pixel 11 release or shipped a broken release for other devices.

A Pixel 11 series bug fix release near the start of September 2026 carried the September 1 patch level. It was not Android 17 QPR1 and did not include the September 2026 Pixel firmware and driver security patches. GrapheneOS suggested that Google may have noticed the regression and cancelled the release.

Reducing memory use

While waiting for a Google fix, GrapheneOS has investigated reducing memory usage. The project found a way to eliminate most of the extra memory used by its secure spawning feature without significant downsides. It aims to ship the improvement before November 2026.

GrapheneOS also said it is expanding its workload to handle basic updates, testing and quality control across the operating system. The project expects its rapidly growing resources to support that additional work.
