NVIDIA Pledges $250 Million in Compute for UK AI Safety Research

NVIDIA will donate $250 million in compute over five years to advance agentic safety and security research in the United Kingdom, backing Oxford, UCL and Imperial College London.

Five-Year, $250 Million Compute Commitment

NVIDIA on Oct. 14, 2026 announced a five-year compute donation valued at $250 million to strengthen the United Kingdom's agentic safety and security research capability. The commitment will provide $50 million in compute access annually to support agentic safety and security research across the UK, with the majority backing the wider research community.

"AI capability and safety must advance together," said Jensen Huang, founder and CEO of NVIDIA. "With this $250 million commitment, NVIDIA will put accelerated computing in the hands of UK researchers to develop, test and strengthen safeguards for increasingly powerful AI."

Oxford, UCL and Imperial College to Share in Funding

A proportion of the commitment will support the British Open-Ended Learning and Discovery Lab (BOLD), led by the University of Oxford, which is developing approaches that help AI systems learn, adapt and operate alongside people; the Science of Fundamental AI Research Lab (SOFAIR), led by UCL, which is exploring new open source AI architectures and more accessible ways to develop and deploy AI; and Imperial College London, where work will include safety engineering and robotics.

Jakob Foerster, founding director of BOLD, said the compute will help explore transparent and human-centric approaches to AI with governance built in from the ground up. Alessandra Russo of Imperial said the university is working to keep safety and assurance at the heart of physical AI, including robots and autonomous systems of agents.

Government Backs Initiative, Compute to Run in the UK

UK AI Minister Kanishka Narayan called the commitment a vote of confidence in Britain's world-leading AI research strength. Business Secretary Jonathan Reynolds said it would help British researchers accelerate the breakthroughs that build trust and support safe deployment. Compute access will be funded through UK-based NVIDIA Cloud Partners, with infrastructure hosted in the UK; provider selection, technical architecture and commercial terms are to be agreed.
