Meta unveils its first VR glasses: $1,299.99, on sale in spring 2027

Meta unveiled its first VR glasses, Meta VR Glasses, at Meta Connect on September 23. The device costs $1,299.99 and goes on sale in spring 2027, initially in the US only. There are no preorders and no exact release date yet.
The glasses weigh around 100 grams. Meta says the system is five times lighter than its Quest 3 headset. The weight comes from a two-piece design: the frames hold only the displays and sensors, while the processor, battery and storage sit in a separate puck that connects over an optical cable and clips to a pocket or bag. According to Meta, the puck's battery delivers up to three hours of continuous video playback and charges at 45W.
The specifications
The glasses use micro-OLED displays — Yahoo Finance describes them as 5K — and Qualcomm's new Snapdragon Reality Elite chip. The puck carries 12GB of RAM and 128GB of storage, and a microSD slot expands that by up to 1TB.
No controllers in the box
The $1,299.99 price covers the glasses and the puck, but not controllers: Touch Plus controllers are sold separately, owners of a Quest 3 or Quest 3S can pair their existing ones, and some retail channels will offer a bundle. The device is designed to work without controllers, with eye tracking, hand gestures and voice. More than 75 games will work with hand gestures alone at launch, and Meta's Muse AI is built into the operating system, so users can talk to it instead of navigating menus.
Films, sports and games
Meta says the VR Glasses are the first VR device certified IMAX Enhanced. Disney+ will stream Marvel films in 3D in select countries from November, while HBO Max, Peacock and Paramount+ will offer 3D catalogues for the first time. Meta also promises more than 100 live sports events a year, with partners including ESPN and UFC, and Microsoft's Xbox Cloud Gaming is coming to the device. Calls will work as photorealistic holograms, including full-body ones.
Why it matters
The VR Glasses are Meta's first VR device since the Quest 3S in 2024, which stays on sale at $299. Mark Zuckerberg said Meta will focus less on the metaverse and release VR devices only when it has a real breakthrough. Pricing outside the US has not been announced.
