Minecraft: Java Edition snapshot swaps GLFW for SDL3
Minecraft’s latest Java snapshot replaces the GLFW windowing library with SDL3, makes borderless fullscreen the default, and adds new data components for custom furnace fuels.
A new windowing backend
The fourth snapshot for Minecraft 26.3, published by the Java team on 16 July 2026, switches the game from GLFW to SDL3 for window management, input and platform integration. Keyboard input now uses SDL scancodes for physical key positions and SDL keycodes for layout-dependent text-editing shortcuts, so key bindings follow physical keys rather than keyboard-layout-specific codes. Mojang notes the build arrived on a Thursday rather than the usual Tuesday, because the team is in peak vacation season in Sweden.
The change is visible in the settings menu. Borderless fullscreen is now the default mode, switching between borderless and exclusive fullscreen no longer requires restarting the game, and the Raw Input mouse setting has been removed — mouse input always uses relative mode while playing. Exclusive fullscreen is no longer supported on macOS, and the minimum window size is now 320 by 240 pixels. On Linux the game will now use and prefer Wayland natively when it is available. The notes list two known issues: exclusive fullscreen may crash on Windows, especially with multiple monitors, and entering it crashes the game on Wayland.
Debug overlay and inventory changes
The debug overlay (F3) can now use a GUI scale separate from the rest of the game, configured through the Debug Options screen with F3 + F6; the default, “Auto”, tries to stay at a higher resolution than the normal interface. Two readouts were added: player speed in blocks per tick, and the display refresh rate.
In the creative inventory, mineral items and blocks have been reordered so that non-tiered ingredients come first and tiered ingredients that craft into equipment come last, with copper blocks still pushed to the end of the building blocks tab. The natural blocks tab now follows an Overworld → Nether → End order, matching other tabs. Spectator-mode players can now interact with portals to teleport, and armadillos no longer try to roll up when submerged in liquids.
Data packs, fuels and world generation
For pack authors, the data pack version is now 111.0 and the resource pack version 92.0. Loot table types with a dedicated registry — including advancement, item_modifier, loot_table, number_provider, predicate, recipe and slot_source — now accept registry element and tag references in most fields. Signs no longer automatically execute click events written in their custom text.
Two new data components define custom fuels: minecraft:cooking_fuel, with burn time and cooking speed driven by number providers, and minecraft:brewing_fuel, with a number of uses and a speed multiplier. The #brewing_fuel item tag has been removed and no longer registers new brewing fuels. Smokers and blast furnaces now store the same cooking time as furnaces in their recipe data, with the speed-up applied through a shared number provider. World generation gains environment attributes for natural mob spawns and creature spawn probability, while the corresponding biome fields were removed; three feature types and the old aquifer and ore-vein settings were restructured as well.
