Nitter now has more working instances than services taken down

Nitter, the open-source alternative front-end for X, looks healthier than it has in years. A community-maintained instance wiki now lists ten fully working public servers, two Tor hidden-service mirrors and three redirectors — a pool that is twice the size of the five services the same page files under "Formerly active / Taken down".

What the list shows

The page lives in the wiki of the "shitter" Nitter fork on Codeberg, and sorts the surviving servers into tiers. Ten addresses sit under "Working instances", among them shitter.thepixora.com, nitter.miningtcup.me and x.n0g.xyz. Two further instances are reachable only as .onion services over Tor, and three redirectors — nitt.tr, twit.0r.cx and xxcancel.com — forward visitors to a live node. A separate "Active but rate limited" section names eleven instances that answer requests but throttle them, while the retired group includes the original nitter.net and the widely used xcancel.com.

Self-hosting as a survival strategy

The wiki also explains why the list keeps changing. Beside the instance table it carries guides for running a public node: reverse-proxy configurations for Nginx, Caddy and Apache, Docker and Unraid setups, and a Cloudflare Tunnel walkthrough. Two linked posts describe how operators obtain session tokens in bulk and how to reduce their exposure to DMCA complaints — a sign that legal pressure and platform restrictions, rather than server failures, are the usual reason an entry stops working.

Picking a working server

Because a single instance can go dark without warning, the project points to third-party helpers that spread traffic around: Twiiit picks a random server from the wiki's list, and nitter-status runs uptime and health checks. Nitter itself renders X timelines as plain HTML, so pages load without the platform's JavaScript, advertising or login prompts — the qualities that make it popular and, at the same time, a frequent target of takedown requests.

Maintainers also collect performance configurations for public instances in a dedicated repository, and the shitter fork on Codeberg counts around a hundred stars.
