What happened
On 24 August 2026, X Corp sent cease-and-desist letters demanding the permanent takedown of Nitter instances and the project's repository. Now the lead developer has updated the repo: following legal advice, the project will continue — and the public instance XCancel is back online.
What Nitter is
Nitter is a free, open-source alternative front-end for X/Twitter built for privacy and speed. It needs no JavaScript, shows no ads, and routes every request through its own servers — so visitors never connect to X directly, and their IP address and browser fingerprint stay untracked. The project is AGPLv3-licensed, with proprietary instances not permitted.
