OpenAI to acquire Pierre Computer Company
OpenAI announced plans to acquire Pierre Computer Company, maker of Code Storage and open-source developer tools used in Codex, subject to customary closing conditions including regulatory approvals.
OpenAI announced that it will acquire Pierre Computer Company, Inc., the company behind Code Storage and a family of open-source developer tools. The deal is subject to customary closing conditions, including regulatory approvals, and the companies will remain separate until it closes. OpenAI said it plans to work with the Pierre team to build on Git workflows and adapt them for teams working with coding agents.
Tools already in Codex
Developers who have browsed files or reviewed changes in the Codex app have already used Pierre's Trees and Diffs libraries. Trees helps developers navigate a project's files, while Diffs makes it easier to see what changed. OpenAI said both tools support review and navigation of large volumes of code with strong performance.
Code review and source control
Pierre's Diffs tool includes an Edit mode that lets a reviewer fix a line of code where a problem is spotted. The company also released Highlights, a syntax highlighter designed to update as a developer types or an agent streams code. In addition, the same team designed the API for Code Storage, a service that lets apps store code and track its history using Git.
Plans after closing
OpenAI said Pierre's open-source projects will remain open source and that it will continue contributing to them. Customers can continue using Code Storage after the acquisition closes while features and functionality are brought into Codex. OpenAI's stated ambition is to advance source control across the industry and make Codex a place for developers and agents to take on ambitious projects.
