Sonic Pi v5 released with a new audio engine and live device switching

Sam Aaron has released Sonic Pi v5: a reworked interface and a new SuperSonic engine that lets musicians change audio devices without restarting the application.

Sam Aaron has released Sonic Pi v5, the fifth major version of the live coding music environment, on August 7. In the announcement he describes the release as "more friendly, more accessible, more powerful and more fun", with both the interface and the underlying synthesis engine overhauled. The full release notes are published on GitHub under the tag v5.0.0, where the release is named "SuperSonic".

A new audio engine: SuperSonic

Since its first version Sonic Pi has generated sound with SuperCollider's scsynth engine. That engine is built for audio research rather than beginner-friendly education software, and some rough edges persisted — for example, plugging headphones into a Mac could require a restart. In v5 scsynth is fully replaced by SuperSonic, a friendlier port that Aaron has worked on for the past year. The headline benefit is that audio settings can be changed directly in the GUI: input and output devices, sample rate and buffer size can be hot-swapped on the fly without rebooting the application or losing the music that is playing. The release also adds native PipeWire support on Linux, enabled by default, a 16-in/16-out patchbay device, and ASIO-aware audio preferences on Windows. A new limiter in the main mixer cuts latency from 20 ms to 1.5 ms.

Playing and performing together

New features target live performance: link_audio streams live audio from another Ableton Link peer straight into Sonic Pi, and use_bpm :midi locks a thread or a live loop to an incoming external MIDI clock. Game controllers such as Xbox pads can now be used as live input, responding to buttons and sticks through sync and get, like MIDI. Sessions can be recorded to video on macOS and Windows, and the Sonic Pi window can be streamed into Syphon or Spout-aware software such as OBS, VDMX and Resolume without screen capture.

Interface and accessibility

The GUI has been reworked as well: a redesigned code completion popup with inline documentation and live previews, a rebuilt documentation pane with runnable examples and interactive synth playgrounds, Quickstart Cards for beginners, an in-editor search, a keyboard shortcuts preferences tab, new scopes and a colour theme system. Accessibility work includes natural screen-reader reading of the documentation, focus management, high-contrast detection and a reduced-motion option. A complete Spanish GUI translation ships with the release, alongside updates in many other languages.

Breaking changes and downloads

Some existing code will need attention. The volume function set_volume! now takes a value between 0 and 1 rather than 0 to 5 and works after the limiter, so anyone who used set_volume! 2 should reach for the new set_drive! function instead. The internal effect chain has been reordered, so an existing piece may sound slightly different, and v5 keeps its own configuration files, separate from v4. Builds are available for macOS (ARM64 and x64), Windows (ARM64 and x64) and Linux (x64, ARM64 and x86 AppImages) from sonic-pi.net.
