Apple Intelligence to Launch in China in December via iOS 27.3
Apple will bring Apple Intelligence to China in December with iOS 27.3 after two years of regulatory delays. The launch will include basic features like photo editing, but Siri AI, Image Playground and the newer Genmoji will be missing.
Apple Intelligence Finally Arrives in China
Apple plans to bring Apple Intelligence to China in December as part of iOS 27.3, according to Bloomberg, ending a wait of about two years since the features first launched elsewhere. The initial rollout will include basic Apple Intelligence capabilities such as photo editing, but the offering will be significantly limited compared to other markets.
What Will and Will Not Be Available
Siri AI will not be available in China at launch, and Image Playground along with the newer version of Genmoji will also be missing. Text generation tools will be limited as well. Apple introduced its first Apple Intelligence features in iOS 18.1, but the capabilities have been absent from China since their debut.
Regulatory Clearance and Local Partnerships
The South China Morning Post reported that China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology recently granted Apple network access permits to integrate Alibaba's Qwen and Tongyi Wanxiang models into the iPhone Duo, iPhone 18 Pro, and earlier iPhones. Because China restricts foreign AI technology, Apple had to partner with local companies including Alibaba and Baidu to launch Apple Intelligence in the country. Apple received initial clearance in July but needed additional approval for a consumer launch, and the company must allow the Chinese government to approve ongoing updates to the AI models.
Competitive Pressure
Competing smartphone makers in China, such as Huawei, have long offered artificial intelligence features, putting Apple at a disadvantage without comparable tools. iOS 27.3 is expected to ship in December.
