TSMC Explores Working With Elon Musk's Terafab as It Weighs a Texas Fab

Culpium and Bloomberg report that TSMC is exploring a partnership with Elon Musk's Terafab chip project and weighing a multibillion-dollar Texas fab, with single-site investments estimated at up to $20 billion. No decision or official confirmation yet.

TSMC is exploring ways to work with Elon Musk's Terafab chip project to help the startup chipmaker run its new semiconductor factories in Texas, journalist Tim Culpan reported in an exclusive Culpium piece, citing people familiar with the matter. Culpan also reported that TSMC may use Terafab as an anchor client for a future Texas fab. No official confirmation has come from TSMC or Musk's team.

The Texas fab plan

Bloomberg separately reports that TSMC is weighing a multibillion-dollar Texas campus as it looks for additional overseas capacity to meet unrelenting AI chip demand. According to people familiar with the plans, the company has been evaluating several possible sites in Texas, with potential single-facility investments reaching about $20 billion. The effort is at an early stage; TSMC already plans to expand in Arizona, and no final decision has been made on a second U.S. location.

Texas is seen as a leading candidate: the state already hosts semiconductor manufacturing infrastructure, including facilities from Terafab, Samsung and Texas Instruments, along with favorable land and energy conditions. Media reports also tie the plans to advanced manufacturing tax credits that would lapse at the end of the year unless Congress extends them.

What Terafab is

Terafab is Musk's chip project in Texas, near College Station, and a joint SpaceX and Tesla initiative. Its first phase is estimated to cost about $16.8 billion, with a footprint of roughly 100 million square feet, and it targets more than 1 terawatt of computing capacity per year. Media have previously reported that Terafab held talks with Intel about using its 14A process.

Why it matters

TSMC is the world's largest contract chipmaker; Bloomberg describes it as the go-to manufacturer for Nvidia and Apple, whose AI hardware depends on its output. With demand outpacing capacity, the company is adding plants in the United States, and a Texas campus would become a second major American location after Arizona. A partnership with Terafab would link Musk's chip ambitions to the leading chipmaker's production muscle.
