What the padlock means

Sony plans to stop making disc based games beginning in January 2028, so digital games need to work flawlessly. On a PS5, some titles can become inaccessible, shown by a padlock icon over the thumbnail. Buying a game from an online store typically does not grant permanent ownership rights. It grants a license to download and play, and Sony has final control over how games linked to an account are accessed. If the company withdraws a license or the authentication process fails, the title is blocked. That is what the padlock indicates.

PlayStation Store and PlayStation Plus subscriptions can create similar problems. A game may have been paid for and installed, yet still demand a current license check before it will run.

How to fix a locked PS5 game

First confirm you are signed into the right PlayStation account, because that account ties purchases and subscriptions together. Sign out through Settings > Users and Accounts > Other > Sign Out, or sign back in through Settings > Users and Accounts > Account > Sign in. The same menu can create new accounts if needed. Check that PlayStation Network is online using the PlayStation Status page, since an outage can lock you out of games.

Verify that PSN recognizes your purchases. For PlayStation Plus, confirm that the subscription is active and that the game is included. Titles are added and removed regularly, so a padlock can appear on a previously downloaded game that is no longer in the library, or after a subscription has lapsed. Review transaction history at Settings > Users and Accounts > Account > Payment and Subscriptions > Transaction History. Plus status is under Settings > Users and Accounts > Account > Payment and Subscriptions > Subscriptions, and the current library is on the PlayStation Plus website.

When people share a console, one player may be able to play another person's games under their own account. This is gamesharing, and it works while the owner has Console Sharing and Offline Play enabled under Settings > Users and Accounts > Other. That option can be active on only one PS5 at a time per account, so an owner with multiple consoles may need to designate the console you are using again.

If access should be direct or shared, force PSN to restore licenses. Select the game in your library, press the Options button on the controller, then choose Restore License. To repair multiple games at once, use Settings > Users and Accounts > Other > Restore Licenses.

If the games stay locked

Restart the PS5 by pressing the PS Button, opening the Power menu and choosing Restart PS5. Install available updates at Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings. Recent patches do not usually affect licensing issues, but checking them rules out another cause.

A padlock on a disc based game means the disc is not acting as the key that authenticates the title. Make sure the correct disc is inserted. Eject it, check that it is clean, and insert it with the label facing up if the console is horizontal, or to the left if the console is vertical.

In an extreme case, the PS5 database may have a glitch. Boot into Safe Mode by holding the Power button on the front until a second beep sounds, which takes a few seconds. After the system shuts down, press and hold the Power button again, then release it only after two beeps, with the second beep expected in seven seconds. Connect the controller with a USB cable and press the PS Button. In Safe Mode, select Clear Cache and Rebuild Database. If that does not help, contact PlayStation Support.
