Firefox 157 brings Mozilla's new design to desktop and mobile

Mozilla has begun rolling out its redesigned Firefox to everyone. The company said the new look arrives with Firefox 157 on desktop and mobile devices, after several months of testing in the Nightly channel, where users tried the design early and shared the feedback that shaped the release.

A more modern Firefox

Mozilla describes the direction as "current, but not generic. Warm, but still precise." Colors, icons and themes were refreshed throughout the browser: the tabs, the toolbars, the New Tab page and Private Browsing. Mozilla says the changes come with no cost to browser performance.

The same design language now runs across desktop and mobile, which Mozilla says gives the browser one consistent foundation for new features while keeping the character that makes Firefox recognizable.

Compact Mode is back, a feature many users asked for. It shrinks tabs and the toolbar so the page gets more of the screen, while a separate Auto-Compact setting handles smaller displays. A new theme picker adds themes and wallpapers, and the New Tab page can be arranged by pinning a shortcut so a site used every day stays in place.

Refined, not reinvented

Mozilla says the things that made people choose Firefox in the first place have not changed. The browser remains independent and open source, with privacy protections built in, and users keep control over how it works: from the height of the toolbars to which AI features appear, which model they use and what context it receives.

The release follows a year of additions to Firefox, among them browsing two pages side by side, a built-in VPN, tracker blocking and options for how AI shows up in the browser.
