Wikimedia Foundation Refuses Voluntary Union Recognition, Hires Union-Avoidance Law Firm

On July 20, Wiki Workers United U.S. formally asked the Wikimedia Foundation to recognize it as a union voluntarily, following a similar request made by WWU-UK, the union's British branch, in June. The union wanted an answer by Friday, July 24, while the Wikimania conference was being held in Paris. No response arrived by that date, even though staff unionization was discussed at the event.

The Foundation insists on an NLRB secret ballot

On July 27 the Foundation published a statement declining voluntary recognition. It argued that "a secret-ballot election conducted by the National Labor Relations Board is the appropriate path forward," saying the process protects individual choice and ensures that the outcome reflects the will of the employees eligible to take part.

WWU responded on July 28 by announcing that it would file for a union election with the NLRB. The union accused the Foundation of being disingenuous, noting that thousands of workers in tech and the nonprofit sector have won recognition through the same "card check" method. "Our demand of the Wikimedia Foundation was simply that they live up to their values and be the high-road employer that they purport to be. They refused," it said, adding that insisting on an NLRB vote has everything to do with delaying the process and stalling the ballot.

A decade-long relationship with Jones Day

Community members pointed to the Foundation's business relationship with the law firm Jones Day, widely known in the United States for aggressive union busting. The Signpost noted that the relationship dates back more than a decade and has mainly concerned brand and trademark management. In the end, the Foundation chose to be represented by Littler Mendelson, a firm with a comparable reputation in the field.

Petitions mount as a vote approaches

A community petition asking the Foundation's Board to recognize the union, started on Meta-Wiki on July 28, passed 150 signatures within days; two earlier petitions from May 2026 have gathered well over 1,200 signatures each. Jimmy Wales wrote on the Wikimedia-l mailing list that the card-signing process was not secret and that some staff members had said they felt pressured, and argued for a clean and clear choice with no chance of pressure, adding that he expected staff to vote in favour of unionization.
