Microsoft Closes Windows 11 Local Account Bypass Loophole
Microsoft has patched a server-side loophole that let Windows 11 users skip Microsoft account requirements during setup. The 'Learn More' shortcut in the Out-of-Box Experience no longer works, though unofficial workarounds remain.
Server-side patch closes setup loophole
Microsoft has closed a loophole that allowed users to sidestep the Microsoft account requirement during the initial setup of consumer versions of Windows 11. The trick, first documented by Windows prodder "Bob Pony," involved clicking "Learn More" when the Out-of-Box Experience (OOBE) prompted for a Microsoft account. This skipped the setup flow directly to the point where users only needed to enter a name and password, effectively creating a local account.
Bob Pony reported the removal of the loophole, and The Register independently verified the finding on real Intel hardware. While the link to skip the Microsoft account requirement was still visible, it no longer worked as intended.
Unofficial workarounds remain
Microsoft requires a Microsoft account during the initial setup of Windows 11 Home and Pro for personal use. For consumers, using Windows 11 without an account has become increasingly difficult, since services such as OneDrive require authentication.
While this easiest route has been closed, other unofficial setup workarounds still exist for users willing to explore them. However, these methods are beyond the skill set of the average user.
Not alone in requiring accounts
According to Bob Pony, the loophole was "quietly patched server side," which aligns with how Microsoft handles such configuration issues. The company has won this round of what has been described as account workaround Whac-a-Mole, although another bypass could emerge in the future.
Microsoft is not the only operating system vendor to demand an account during setup. By contrast, many Linux distributions do not require one, offering users a simpler offline setup path.
