What happened

The outage started on Sunday evening and lasted long enough that players could open neither downloaded titles nor disc-based ones. The blog post points to the obvious contradiction: the disc sits in the drive, and the game still refuses to start.

A disc is no longer a guarantee

The post's author argues that physical media no longer works the way many players imagine. A current-generation disc is effectively a licence key: it installs content to the console's internal drive, and the game often needs additional downloads or updates before it will run at all. That means Microsoft, Sony or Nintendo can prevent access — deliberately or, as in this case, by accident — even when the physical copy is in your hands.

Why older hardware looks different

As a counterexample, the author describes an Analogue Pocket handheld and Game Boy cartridges from roughly two decades ago: they still start immediately, with no authorisation from Nintendo required and no dependence on a network service. No network downtime is going to prevent that, he writes.
