According to a report from Digitimes, spotted by TweakTown, all three major memory manufacturers — Samsung, SK Hynix and Micron — have sold through their 2027 memory manufacturing capacity. All DRAM and HBM capacity for 2027 is said to be sold, with no further supply planned. The manufacturers themselves have not confirmed the report.

Long-term agreements lock in the supply

Most of the buyers secured their capacity through long-term purchasing agreements with five-year terms, effectively pre-ordering memory that has not been manufactured yet. Unless additional capacity opens up, the report suggests there is little prospect of RAM becoming more affordable or less scarce in the near future. Demand for NAND storage is also growing, though NAND capacity has not been fully absorbed because more suppliers compete in that market.

Prices rise through the product stack

The consequences are already visible at retail. A standard PCIe 4 drive, the 1TB Western Digital SN7100, cost about $110 in January; it now sells for $189 before a small Amazon discount, roughly 52% more, according to the price tracker Camelcamelcamel. Higher memory costs are showing up in consumer hardware as well: the Xbox Series X recently went up in price, and the Steam Machine launched at a higher price than Valve wanted because of higher memory costs.
