VB6 Studio Web 0.6.0 expands browser-based development features

VB6 Studio Web 0.6.0 adds runtime MDI, resource tools, project-defined interfaces, cancellable evaluation and broader live editing, while retaining standalone HTML export.

Browser-based development environment

VB6 Studio Web 0.6.0 is a browser-native development environment for classic Visual Basic, with a source runtime and controls library built using HTML, CSS and JavaScript. It draws through WebGPU and falls back to Canvas2D. The project is not a complete, native or pixel-identical replacement for Microsoft VB6.

The IDE is designed to open directly in a browser and can also be served as a static site. It requires no service, database or account. Browser origin policies may restrict local files, clipboard access or persistent storage, so editable .vb6web backups remain important. Projects can be exported as independent single HTML applications that embed their own runtime.

Features added in 0.6.0

The release adds runtime MDI forms and child windows, project-defined interfaces and default members, module-scoped DefType declarations, explicit cancellable paused-function evaluation, broader mapped live editing and workspace restoration for supported modeless tools. Its Resource Editor supports native Win32 .res string and binary import and export, byte preservation, VBP ResFile32 integration and runtime resource functions.

Eligible straight-line code insertions and deletions can be remapped while paused locals and caller continuation are preserved, although unsafe changes require a restart. The release also includes active-window tracking, window cascading and tiling, and coordinated cancellable unloading. Three shared IDE themes remain available, while exported applications retain a theme independent of the IDE.

Runtime, examples and controls

The browser compiler and cooperative VM execute VB-style source through their own instruction model rather than JavaScript eval. Supported areas include procedures, classes, properties, arrays, records, events, error handling and private binary or text files. There are 37 offered browser control types, including TreeView, ListView, RichTextBox, grids, tabs, toolbars, calendars, charts and file-dialog adapters. Familiar control names do not imply full native API coverage. Native COM and OCX loading, DLL calls, Windows API execution and arbitrary add-ins are not implemented.

Eleven examples cover areas including Order Entry, Calculator, Clock, Graphics Lab, Data Browser, Common Controls, Language Lab and Rich Text Editor. Each generated HTML application can run without the IDE.

Build and launch caveats

Building requires Node.js 22 or later and has no npm package dependencies. Browser tests require Python, Playwright, Pillow and an installed Chromium executable. The release environment blocked direct file and localhost navigation with ERR_BLOCKED_BY_ADMINISTRATOR before startup, so those probes are not successful launch tests. Emitted HTML and exported applications were tested through inline Chromium loading.

The compatibility documentation notes incomplete coercion, lifetime and binding semantics. Hardware WebGPU, physical Safari or mobile devices, and every IME and accessibility path are not certified. Optional Windows targets include a modern portable EXE and a classic EXE built with a separately installed licensed VB6 compiler. The classic target depends on the external 32-bit VB6 runtime and project-specific OCX or COM components.
