Discord sorts accounts into age groups automatically, saying 90% will not need to confirm age

Discord has started placing accounts into age groups automatically. The company says the system gives teenagers more protection while leaving the adult experience unchanged. The announcement, published on Discord's blog on September 22 by CTO and co-founder Stanislav Vishnevskiy, says more than 90% of users will never be asked to confirm their age.

How the age group is determined

Accounts fall into three statuses: adult (18+), teen (13-17) and unconfirmed. Discord estimates the group from account signals — the age of the account, the servers, communities and games it is connected to, and general activity levels. The company says the model does not read messages, calls or other content, and that no single server or friend decides the result. Status can be checked under User Settings → Account Status. The age group is not shown on the profile or visible to other members.

What changes for teens

Adult accounts see no change. Teens keep messaging, voice calls and non-age-restricted servers, with three added protections: messages from non-friends go to the message-request inbox first, and friend requests from strangers come with a warning; sensitive images are blurred or blocked, and age-restricted servers, channels and bot commands stay out of reach; full profile details and activity are visible only to friends and members of smaller shared servers. Unconfirmed accounts get the same protections, except that profile details and activity stay visible to everyone in shared servers.

New ways to confirm age

Discord also added methods that require neither an ID nor a selfie. Depending on region and device, users may see credit-card confirmation — k-ID routes the details through Stripe, neither company sees the card data, and a small temporary charge is refunded within 14 business days; age-range sharing from the Apple App Store or Google Play; a Google Wallet pass based on passports from Brazil, Singapore, Taiwan, the UK and the US; or AgeKey, a reusable age credential. Video selfies run on the device and ID scans are deleted right after the check.

Data and transparency

The post repeats commitments made in February: every third-party age-assurance vendor is publicly documented, partners must delete submitted data once an age group is confirmed, and facial age estimation must run entirely on the device. Discord retired the manual review process with the vendor linked to the September 2025 data breach; reviews now run through k-ID. The model is not yet available in the UK and Australia, it will make mistakes and be improved, and anyone already confirmed will not have to repeat the process.
