Anbernic Reveals RG DDS Dual-Screen Handheld With 3DS-Friendly Displays

Anbernic has revealed the RG DDS, a clamshell handheld with a 5:3 main display and a 4:3 secondary screen sized for 3DS emulation. It runs on a Snapdragon G2 Gen 2 chip and adds an extra analog stick and a stylus.

Dual Displays Matched to the 3DS

Anbernic has revealed the RG DDS, short for "Dream Dual-Screen," a clamshell handheld that serves as an obvious nod to the Nintendo 3DS. The device follows the RG DS, which Anbernic teased only a year ago as its remake of the Nintendo DS.

The RG DDS pairs a 4.7-inch main display with a 1,200 x 720 resolution and a 5:3 aspect ratio with a 4-inch secondary display running at 960 x 720 for a 4:3 aspect ratio. Anbernic says the matching ratios make the handheld well suited for replaying 3DS favorites.

Snapdragon Power and Controls

Under the hood, the RG DDS uses Qualcomm's Snapdragon G2 Gen 2 chip, an upgrade over its predecessor that Anbernic says should handle emulation up to Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 2 titles. The company has not revealed the rest of the internals beyond a 6,000mAh battery.

The controls closely mirror Nintendo's handheld, but Anbernic added an extra analog stick on the right side. The device also includes an extendable capacitive stylus that can be tucked away when not in use, plus a dedicated AI button whose features have not yet been detailed.

Pricing and Availability

As usual, Anbernic did not announce pricing or release dates in the reveal. The RG DDS is expected to cost a little more than its $99 precursor, though the company is known for affordability and could undercut the recently released Retroid Pocket Duo and its Lite model, which starts at $149.
