Apple CEO John Ternus says company won't ship AI for AI's sake

In a Wired interview, Apple CEO John Ternus defended the company's current AI position, saying Apple will leverage AI in new products but does not want to ship AI for its own sake.

During a recent interview with Wired's Steven Levy, Apple CEO John Ternus defended the company's current position in the AI landscape. He said Apple is "absolutely going to leverage AI" in its new products, but added, "We don't want to ship AI for AI's sake." He also said the creation of products is a deeply human and personal thing that Apple loves to do.

Apple's AI position

Over the past couple of years, Apple has often been described as behind on AI, especially after it delayed the release of a more powerful version of Siri. That version finally launched this summer. Ternus, who officially became CEO at the beginning of September, acknowledged that "everyone has an opinion," but insisted, "I really like where we're at."

AI in new products

Ternus said that when Apple is doing AI right, people will not have to think about whether AI or more traditional software made something happen. What matters, he said, is whether Apple built something that people really love. The comments came as Levy pressed him on whether AI could affect Apple and its ecosystem more dramatically.

Apps and human creativity

Levy asked whether agents could make things like apps unnecessary. Ternus replied, "That could make life really easy, I suppose, but the creation of products is a deeply human and personal thing, something that we love to do." The interview covered Apple's AI strategy and its approach to product development.
