Apple Updates HomePod Mini With New Audio Features and Colors

Apple's HomePod mini 2 arrives October 30 with new colors, Sound Glow lighting, multi-speaker surround support for Apple TV 4K, and Mac audio over AirPlay. Siri AI support is coming later.

Audio Features Take Center Stage

Apple's updated smart speaker, officially dubbed the HomePod mini 2, focuses almost entirely on audio enhancements. A new tool called Sound Glow mimics album artwork on the speaker's light panel by displaying the same colors. When playing a soundscape, the panel shows light patterns resembling raindrops or ocean waves.

The speaker can also serve as audio output for a Mac or MacBook over AirPlay when two units are paired, and the connection remains persistent until the user changes it. The feature works with any Mac.

In the living room, up to four HomePod mini 2 units can function as surround sound speakers with the new Apple TV 4K. The setup also supports the second-gen HomePod, allowing configurations such as two of each speaker connected to a TV. Previously, only two HomePod speakers could be used in the living room. For those wanting more power, Apple now offers the option of four second-gen regular HomePods.

New Colors and Design

The HomePod mini 2 looks nearly identical to the original mini, with the main visual change being new fabric cover colors. Apple has added blue, green, and pink options alongside the existing white and Midnight hues. The pink colorway matches the pink iMac, while the blue and green options offer additional choices.

Siri AI Arrives Later, Price Increases

The most notable update for the new HomePod mini is what is not yet available. Siri AI will not be present on the speaker at launch, and Apple has not specified a timeframe for its arrival. The company confirmed the model will eventually support the new version of Siri.

The HomePod mini 2 is available for pre-order today at $149 and will be available on October 30. The first HomePod mini launched in 2020 at $99, so the new model carries a higher price tag along with its years-long wait for an update.
