Bambu Lab Teases Its First 3D Scanner
Bambu Lab has officially teased its first 3D scanner, the S1 3D, ahead of its planned release in November 2026. The company has not released any product details yet, but FCC filings and its partnership with SCANOLOGY may offer hints about the scanner's capabilities and shared technology.
What the FCC Filings Reveal
Speculation in Bambu Lab's own forums uncovered FCC filings containing a label and drawing of the scanner. The label shows a 60W-rated input, leading some to speculate a shared platform with SCANOLOGY's 3DeVOK MT Gen2, a wired composite 3D scanner released in 2026 that uses both blue and IR lasers and also carries a 60W rated input. The input rating does not confirm shared technology, but it hints at potential capabilities, with the number of lasers and possibly a screen dictating power requirements.
Considering the flat spot and the top of the handle in the FCC drawings, the scanner may include a screen, possibly similar to the 3DeVOK MT Gen2. More importantly, the 60W rating with no hints of a battery on the label may mean the scanner will require a PC to operate. This is often a pain point, as users would need either a powerful laptop while scanning or a very long USB cable connected to a PC.
A Niche Market with Established Players
3D scanners remain a niche within a niche, and not necessarily within the 3D printing niche either. 3D scanning is used in fields such as game asset creation, texture assets, archaeology, prosthetics, and museum archiving, while the rise of 3D printing has created small but growing demand for reverse engineering automotive and various niche parts. However, PC requirements, intensive and technical scan cleanup, and resurfacing in CAD programs keep the market small.
The niche is currently served by brands such as Creality with its CR-Scan line, Revopoint's Pop series, mini, and all-in-one MIRACO scanner, and SHINING3D's Einstar prosumer-level 3D scanner. As for pricing, the 3DeVOK MT Gen2 is officially priced at $8,299, a very high price point that makes a shared platform unlikely if Bambu Lab wants to keep consumer-friendly pricing.
