OpenAI Launches Rosalind Academic Plan to Provide Free Access to Life Sciences AI
OpenAI has introduced the Rosalind Academic Plan, offering eligible academic labs up to 30 free Business Standard seats for 12 months. This provides access to GPT-Rosalind, a life sciences model, and the Rosalind Workbench for research.
Introducing the Rosalind Academic Plan
OpenAI has announced the Rosalind Academic Plan to help more academic scientists access GPT-Rosalind. This dedicated life sciences model combines frontier reasoning with the Rosalind Workbench, which enables specialized tool orchestration across medicinal chemistry, genomics, wet-lab assistance, and other scientific applications. Under the new plan, eligible labs can receive up to 30 Business Standard seats at no cost for up to 12 months. Access to GPT-Rosalind is provided subject to trusted-access approval. Research data shared through the plan is not used to train OpenAI models by default.
Supporting Foundational Research
Academic research creates the knowledge that entire fields build on. Work that begins with a fundamental question about biology can eventually change how diseases are diagnosed, medicines are developed, or food is grown. Many modern advances grew out of years of basic research, such as the Human Genome Project, which helped launch modern genomics. Curiosity-driven work on bacterial immune systems led to CRISPR-Cas9, while decades of university research on mRNA laid the groundwork for COVID-19 vaccines. By helping scientists combine their expertise with AI tools built for life sciences research, OpenAI aims to support discoveries that reach far beyond the lab.
Plan Details and Application Process
The Rosalind Academic Plan is currently available to academic labs at U.S. universities. Principal investigators and lab leads at universities without an OpenAI Enterprise agreement can apply on behalf of their labs through the trusted access process. Labs at universities with an existing agreement must apply through their university's Enterprise access process. Once approved, lab leads can activate free access to GPT-Rosalind for up to 30 named members, alongside other included frontier models. API access is not included at this time. Verified lab leads manage member permissions and are responsible for their lab's approved use.
Responsible Access and Safeguards
Before activating access, OpenAI verifies the institution's legitimacy and the lab lead's identity. The review covers the lead's professional background, institutional appointment, and authority to oversee lab access. The assessment also evaluates the lab's research activities and intended use, establishing clear responsibilities for the lab lead and a designated institutional safety contact. Safeguards continue after activation through monitoring and enforcement. For registered high-sensitivity use cases, safety checks account for the approved research context. When questions arise, researchers may be contacted to clarify the work and confirm authorization, an approach designed to detect potential misuse while reducing interruptions to authorized work.
