ChatGPT can now virtually try on clothes for you
OpenAI is rolling out two new ChatGPT shopping features worldwide: a virtual try-on that shows how a garment or accessory would look on the user's own photo, and a Favorites library that saves products for later. Both run on the new ChatGPT Images 2.5 model.
OpenAI announced on Thursday a global rollout of two new shopping features for ChatGPT: a virtual try-on tool and a way to save products for later. The update arrives as AI assistants search for consumer use cases around shopping that stick.
A virtual fitting room inside ChatGPT
With try-on, users upload a selfie or a full-body photo and ChatGPT shows how a piece of clothing or an accessory would look on them. The option appears as a new "try on" button in the assistant's shopping results. Users can also upload an image of an item, such as a screenshot from a web page, and ask ChatGPT to try it on for them.
The second feature, Favorites, saves products into a Library inside the app so users can return to them later. The company says the saved items sit alongside the images generated by the try-on tool.
Powered by ChatGPT Images 2.5
OpenAI said both features draw on ChatGPT Images 2.5, its newly launched image model. According to the company, the model produces more natural lighting and richer textures, follows editing instructions more reliably, and reduces image generation latency.
Beyond the fitting room
ChatGPT can help shoppers in other ways too. A user can describe a style they would like to try and ask the assistant to shop for the pieces needed to complete the look. A user can also upload photos of celebrities' outfits and ask it to find the items they are wearing that are available for purchase.
That takes the assistant into territory where Pinterest and Google have long been the starting points for fashion inspiration that converts into sales for online retailers. Google launched its own virtual try-on last year. OpenAI has also backed away from one idea in this space: an instant checkout feature it tested did not perform well. More recently, the agentic AI startup Instinct began pushing product recommendations to users, and some people felt the proactive suggestions were more like ads than helpful tips.
Whether ChatGPT becomes people's first choice for that kind of shopping remains to be seen.
