OpenAI reports more than 1 billion weekly users and 2.5 million businesses
OpenAI says its products — including ChatGPT, ChatGPT Work and Codex — now reach more than one billion weekly active users and serve 2.5 million businesses, per a mid-August 2026 snapshot.
OpenAI published “The Work Now Within Reach” on September 8, 2026. The company says its products reach more than one billion weekly active users and 2.5 million businesses — a mid-August 2026 snapshot covering ChatGPT, ChatGPT Work, Codex and applications built on its API.
What OpenAI announced
The figure spans OpenAI’s entire product family, not ChatGPT alone, and the company does not break down how usage splits between personal and business settings. In the announcement, OpenAI argues that consumer and enterprise use reinforce each other: people bring familiarity with ChatGPT from home into work, while enterprise tools change what they expect from AI elsewhere.
What it means for businesses
More than a billion weekly users is primarily an adoption metric, not proof that AI delivers the same value in every use case. It does shift the starting point: the question is less whether employees will encounter AI assistants than where those assistants belong in real workflows — and where they do not. Widespread use can also create a false sense of readiness: an assistant serving an isolated task is not the same as one connected to customer data, code repositories or operational systems, which requires decisions about access, data handling, integration, ownership and monitoring. It also helps to separate an AI copilot, which assists a person who stays in the loop, from automation, which moves information or triggers actions across systems.
Where to start
The practical next step is usually a limited, measurable use case with a clear owner and a baseline — the time spent preparing a recurring report, answers to common customer questions, or assembling information from several documents. Typical starting points include first drafts of customer communications, proposals or internal documents; summaries of long material for human review; and help with code generation and explanation subject to testing and code review. Teams should also settle the conditions for responsible use: what data may be entered, when a person must verify an output, which tools are approved — plus cost planning and integration for workflows that depend on a CRM, help desk or database.
AI search growth as context
The milestone lands amid wider demand for AI-led research. Perplexity reported 780 million queries in May 2025, according to June 2025 reporting by TechCrunch that quoted CEO Aravind Srinivas. That figure is historical context, not a 2026 number, and it is not directly comparable with OpenAI’s measure; together, however, the two point the same way — people increasingly turn to AI for information work.
