Semiconductor Fab Simulator Fab24hr Goes Viral in Taiwan, Players Compare It to 'a Horror Game'

Fab24hr, a 3D web game simulating a day in a semiconductor wafer factory, has gone viral in Taiwan. Its realistic portrayal of fab life has led some industry veterans to describe it as 'a horror game' or 'prison.'

What Is Fab24hr?

Fab24hr is a free 3D web game that puts players in the shoes of a semiconductor wafer factory worker. Developed in Taiwan, the simulator, officially themed "A Day in the Life of a Semiconductor Wafer Factory Worker," presents a blocky isometric 3D factory that runs directly in the browser. The interface loads quickly, asks the player to enter a character name, and then prompts them to clock in.

The game is available in Chinese, English, and Japanese, making it accessible to players across several markets.

Two Ways to Play

Fab24hr offers two game modes. The main story, titled "The life of a chip," takes the player through 12 chapters in which their character shepherds a hearing-aid chip from the R&D line all the way into the hands of an end user. Along the way, players must simulate dealing with equipment failures, process anomalies, and production progress emergencies, and they may also have to file reports about operational errors. The mode features three endings that depend on the player's progress and decisions.

The second mode, "A day in the fab," asks the player to pick a factory location and a role, such as a Process Engineer. The day might begin with the ETCH-03 semiconductor tool breaking down while everyone waits for an estimate of when it will be fixed. According to the game, paying attention to the handover from the previous shift provides the clues needed to cope.

Too Realistic for Comfort

The game has gone viral in Taiwan, where it was developed. Taiwan's TVBS news reported that the simulator is so realistic that it resonates with actual fab workers, though not always in a positive way. Some players have likened the experience to "a horror game" or even "prison," according to machine translations of their comments.

A brief hands-on test in a browser ran without issues and made it clear why the simulation stresses out some Taiwanese fab veterans. Rather than offering lighthearted escapism, the game closely mirrors the pressures of real semiconductor manufacturing shifts, an experience some describe as "super scary."

Accessible to Newcomers

Despite its authenticity, Fab24hr is designed to be approachable. Technical terms are explained within the game, so even players with no semiconductor industry experience can follow along and enjoy the experience. The combination of educational framing and stressful realism appears to be a large part of the game's viral appeal in Taiwan and among chip industry observers elsewhere.
