Godot Project Manager Opens Blank on macOS Sequoia 15.8.2 Beta

Godot users on macOS Sequoia 15.8.2 beta report a fully blank Project Manager and empty new project windows on Apple silicon Macs. A command line rendering driver workaround works, and developers suspect a macOS beta OpenGL regression.

Blank Project Manager Reported on macOS Sequoia 15.8.2 Beta

Godot users running the macOS Sequoia 15.8.2 beta report that the engine's Project Manager and project creation windows open completely blank. The problem was filed as issue #124311 on the godotengine/godot repository on October 9, 2026 by user tobycroft, who reproduced it on both a Mac mini M1 and a MacBook Pro M1 after updating the machines to build 15.8.2 (24H219).

The report lists Godot 4.7.2 Stable and 4.8 dev7 as tested versions. According to the author, reinstalling the application and clearing the cache and configuration in Application Support did not help. A verbose startup log shows no errors: the engine initializes, editor settings and theme load, and the Apple M1 Pro GPU is detected through Metal and MoltenVK.

Workaround Points to an OpenGL Regression

Godot contributor bruvzg responded on October 14, 2026, suggesting the command line arguments --rendering-driver metal or --rendering-driver opengl3_angle, and noted that the issue might be OpenGL related. The reporter confirmed both arguments work.

Bruvzg stated that the issue could not be reproduced on macOS 15.8.1 in a virtual machine and linked to similar blank window reports affecting other applications, including OrcaSlicer, kitty, alacritty, and BambuStudio. The problem also does not reproduce on macOS 27.0.1. A follow up update to build 15.8.2 (24H225) did not change the behavior, and the reporter said feedback sent to Apple received no reply.

Metal as Future Default on macOS

The report sparked a discussion about the default renderer on macOS. Bruvzg said the Project Manager should probably use Metal by default, since Apple deprecated OpenGL a long time ago. The only downside mentioned is a longer first-time startup caused by shader compilation.

According to bruvzg, the editor itself already runs with the renderer set in the project settings, and the default for new projects is Metal (Forward+). Only the Project Manager still defaults to OpenGL. The reporter asked whether switching the Project Manager to OpenGL would affect performance.
