Current AI: The Nonprofit Racing to Build a 'World Wide Web of AI' Free for All

Founded in February 2025 by Martin Tisne, Current AI has already secured $400 million in committed funding from an unprecedented coalition: the French government ($100 million seed), the Ford Foundation, the MacArthur Foundation, DeepMind, and Salesforce. Suno Sutra: A Pocket-Sized Device Speaking 22 Indian Languages
At the India AI Summit in February 2026, Current AI unveiled Suno Sutra (Hindi for "listening chronicles") — a pocket-sized, offline device that runs AI in 22 Indian languages with no internet required. The project was built in partnership with Bhashini, the Indian government's AI language division.
"In India, there are hundreds of different languages and dialects, and right now AI is not representing them," Bdeir said. The device is fully open-source, available for developer communities to build upon. This is particularly transformative in regions where internet access is limited or nonexistent. Suno Sutra can deliver AI-powered information — agricultural advice, educational content, healthcare guidance — to farmers, teachers, and health workers in their native languages, offline.

$400 Million — Not Investment, But Funding
Current AI operates as a "public-private partnership" that brings together governments, companies, and philanthropies to fund public interest technology. The French government seeded the initiative with $100 million, joined by the Ford Foundation, the MacArthur Foundation, DeepMind, and Salesforce — bringing total committed funding to $400 million.
"They're not investors; they're funders," Bdeir emphasized. This distinction is fundamental: investors expect returns, while funders seek social impact. The model is deliberately different from venture capital, focusing on long-term public good rather than short-term profit.
The problem Current AI aims to solve is stark: every major AI system today — from OpenAI to Google to Anthropic — belongs to a private company. There is no public alternative on the scale of the internet itself. "Like the World Wide Web, available to anyone, for free," remains the guiding vision.
$3.2 Million in Grants — From Kenya to the Amazon
Current AI's first grant round, announced in June 2026, deployed $3.2 million across four organizations spanning Kenya, Lebanon, and the Brazilian Amazon:
- Masakhane (Kenya) — Building AI datasets across more than 50 African languages for health, agriculture, and education, ensuring that African communities have AI tools that understand their languages and contexts.
- Institute for Worldmaking (Lebanon) — Digitizing Arab cultural history and contemporary practice into machine-readable databases that communities — not tech companies — control and govern.
- Portal sem Porteiras (Brazil) — Developing offline AI tools with Indigenous Amazon communities, keeping data strictly within their territories and respecting traditional knowledge protocols.
- African Internet Rights Alliance (Kenya) — Creating audit tools to hold AI systems accountable across the continent, ensuring transparency and fairness in algorithmic decision-making.
"Scale is not always the measure. That is the Big Tech paradigm," Bdeir said. "This could look like an Indigenous elder in the Brazilian Amazon using a tool built in Kenya to be able to pass down ecological knowledge in their own language."
Language Carries Culture — AI Must Speak Every Tongue
Half the world's spoken languages face extinction. "And with English driving the largest language models and AI systems, a bulk of the world's languages and, consequently, cultures and communities are left behind," Bdeir warned.
When asked about Big Tech's multilingual efforts, Bdeir drew a sharp distinction. "Big Tech builds multilingual models to expand their market," she said, "regardless of consent or context." The consequences are concrete: "For Indigenous languages, missionary Bible translations become training data before communities have set any rules."
This is about more than just translation. "Language is how knowledge, tradition, memory and identity get carried from one generation to the next. So when a technology can't speak your language, it can't hold your culture either," Bdeir explained. Current AI's alternative is an open system modeled on the early web, where every community maintains sovereignty over its linguistic and cultural data.
Alpha Chat and the Open-Source AI Stack
In July 2026, at the AI for Good Summit in Geneva, Current AI launched Alpha Chat — an open-source AI chatbot assembled in just seven weeks by a ten-organization coalition including Hugging Face, Mozilla, and the MIT Media Lab. Current AI's approach stores models and data locally, engages community experts from the start, and builds consent protocols into every pipeline so communities can halt the process at any point.
