Cursor Launches Origin — an AI-Native GitHub Alternative for Code Hosting
Cursor rolls out Origin in early beta on all paid plans: hosted repos, two-way GitHub sync, pull requests and agents in the same place — a direct challenge to GitHub.
What happened: Cursor starts hosting code
On August 17, Cursor announced Origin, its own code-hosting platform. The company whose AI coding editor is used by millions of developers is rolling hosting out in early beta on all paid plans — except enterprise organizations whose admins opt out. New repos are created in a Codebase tab, and the name you choose becomes part of every repo URL. For repos hosted on Origin, Origin is the source of truth: pushes land there and GitHub is no longer in the path.
A full migration is not required
Origin does not force users to move. Teams can connect GitHub, pick an organization and sync selected repos — those mirror in real time, but for them GitHub stays the source of truth. Pull requests show commits, checks and diffs, and on synced repos comments travel both ways. Agents live in every repo: Cursor can answer questions about the code you are browsing, make changes or push a branch. Vercel, Depot and Buildkite integrations are already available.
