Eric Schmidt Reportedly Holds About 1% of Anthropic, Half of CEO Dario Amodei's Stake

Former Google CEO Eric Schmidt reportedly owns about 1% of Anthropic after investing tens of millions in its 2021 Series A round, roughly half the stake held by CEO Dario Amodei, according to Bloomberg.

Schmidt's Reported Anthropic Stake

Eric Schmidt, the former Google CEO, reportedly owns about 1% of Anthropic after investing tens of millions of dollars in the AI lab's Series A round in 2021, according to Bloomberg. At the time, the startup was valued at $461 million, based on PitchBook data.

If Bloomberg's estimate is accurate, Schmidt's stake is remarkably large compared with the 2% of the company held by co-founder and CEO Dario Amodei. In other words, the outside investor owns about half as much of Anthropic as its own chief executive.

Potential Windfall From an IPO

Anthropic is widely expected to go public before the end of the year. Top-end market estimates value the company at as much as $2 trillion. At that valuation, Schmidt would add as much as $20 billion to his net worth, which Bloomberg currently puts at $57.5 billion.

Schmidt and Anthropic did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

An Active Tech Investor

Schmidt has been an active tech investor since stepping down as Google CEO in 2011. He deploys capital through multiple entities, including Tomorrow Ventures, Innovation Endeavors Management, and his family office, Hillspire.
