Figma Unveils Markdown-Based Specs Editor and Agent Tools at First India Config Event

Figma launched Figma Specs, a Markdown-based editor for defining design languages, at its first Config event in India. The company also expanded agent access, put code layers into public beta, and integrated the Payload CMS.

Figma Specs Brings Design Rules Into Markdown

Figma announced a new feature called Figma Specs during its first Config event, held in India. Figma Specs is a Markdown-based editor that lets users define their company's design language in a simple, text-based way. The document can serve as a reference for both teams and AI agents while designing inside Figma.

Specs can exist as a standalone file in Figma or co-exist within the design canvas. Beyond acting as a plain text editor, users can reference other Figma elements directly, such as elements on the canvas, and embed FigJam diagrams, code layers, and existing designs. Teams can also bring in broader design context, including design libraries, code libraries, and guidelines, to manage the context available to their design system.

Steering Agents Toward Predictable Outcomes

Through these features, Figma aims to provide a definition that its own agents and third-party agents can adhere to when creating with AI. In the past week, the company also made its agent on canvas available to a wider user base. Given the non-deterministic nature of AI, Figma is providing tools to steer its agents toward more predictable outcomes.

Code Layers Enter Public Beta

Figma is also moving its code layers feature to public beta. The feature, which adds coding capabilities to designs on the canvas for more interactive prototypes, was first announced in private beta in June. At the India event, the company opened it to more users for testing. Users can ask the agent to turn a design into code or change part of the code to iterate on a prototype.

Figma's chief design officer Loredana Crisan told TechCrunch that the company sees Figma as the place where software teams come to decide what they build and ship. She noted that 17 times more lines of code are being produced today than in the past, but only 1.3 times more releases are shipping, adding that much of that code is built to discover what the product is rather than to ship it.

MCP Expansion, Payload Integration, and India Growth

The company said it is supporting more than 20 new tools with its MCP, including Open Code, Dia, Grok Bot, and Indian AI startup Sarvam. Figma acquired open-source headless CMS Payload last year, and it is now integrating Payload with Figma Make for generating dynamic websites and directly managing content. Figma said Payload's downloads have increased sixfold in the last 12 months.

Figma opened its first office in India late last year, with sales, partnership, go-to-market, and product support functions. The company said India is its biggest market in terms of users outside the United States, and the platform works with 40 percent of India's top 100 companies listed on the Bombay Stock Exchange.
