Four months of VoidZero at Cloudflare: 80+ releases and a faster JavaScript toolchain

Four months after VoidZero joined Cloudflare, the team has published a progress report on the open-source JavaScript toolchain it maintains. The update, released during Cloudflare's Birthday Week, checks the work against the commitment made when the team joined: Vite, Vitest, Rolldown, Oxc and Vite+ will stay open source, vendor-agnostic and community-driven.

More than 80 releases and 1,200 closed issues

In four months the team shipped more than 80 releases and closed over 1,200 issues. Several of them brought large performance gains. The Oxc React Compiler, released in August, compiles React.js applications 10x faster than the original Babel implementation, uses less memory and handles errors more completely. Vitest 5, released in September, is up to 50% faster than Vitest 4: it shares transformed files across projects, caches modules on disk and moves less data between the main process and its workers.

The type-aware linting engine tsgolint is now stable and runs 12 to 18 times faster than ESLint with typescript-eslint, while covering 59 of its 61 type-aware rules. The formatter Oxfmt is 7x faster than Prettier after its JSON, CSS, SCSS, Less, GraphQL and YAML formatters were rewritten in Rust, and it keeps Prettier-compatible output.

A toolchain tuned for agents as well as people

Cloudflare frames the work around a change in who waits for these tools. As inference gets faster, type-checking, linting and building become the bottleneck again. Because the tools are built on each other, from the Oxc compiler to the Rolldown bundler, the Vite build tool, the Oxlint linter and the Vitest test runner, a speed-up at one layer reaches everything built on top of it.

Vite+ reaches 1.0 and Bundled Dev spreads

Vite+, which bundles the whole toolchain with a set of good defaults, has reached version 1.0. It ships Vite 8, Vitest 5, Rolldown, Oxlint and Oxfmt with task caching built in. The team is also preparing "Bundled Dev", a development mode that uses Vite's production bundler while developing; Cloudflare's own dashboard already uses it for all internal developers.

Open source funding and what comes next

VoidZero is a member of the Open Source Pledge. Cloudflare committed $1 million to a Vite ecosystem fund when the team joined and has since committed a further $1 million to open source. Planned work includes parser improvements in Oxc with up to 3x potential speedup, a redesigned chunking algorithm in Rolldown and an open-source, self-hostable version of Void, the Vite-native deployment platform built on Cloudflare.
