Peak XV raises Surge seed ceiling to $5M and unveils an 18-startup cohort
Peak XV Partners has lifted the maximum it invests per startup through its seed platform Surge to $5 million and presented Surge 12, an 18-company cohort working across AI, robotics, space and fintech.
Peak XV Partners, one of the largest venture capital firms investing in India and Southeast Asia with more than $10 billion in assets under management, has raised the ceiling on what it invests per startup through Surge, its seed-stage platform, and unveiled a cohort of 18 companies.
The batch, Surge 12, is the first to work under a ceiling of up to $5 million per company, up from $3 million. Peak XV invested more than $50 million across the cohort, which has collectively raised over $90 million in seed funding, the firm said. The median investment also rose, though Peak XV declined to disclose the figure.
The Series A bar keeps rising
“The bar to raise a Series A has gone up pretty significantly,” said Rajan Anandan, managing director at Peak XV, in an interview. The firm is also seeing more capital-intensive companies, particularly in deeptech, that raise larger rounds at the seed stage.
Surge has become more global with each cohort, Anandan said: the latest group spans founders and companies from San Francisco to Sydney. Only five of the 18 startups target the Indian market, though more than half are based in India.
Eighteen startups across seven sectors
The cohort spans AI, robotics, space, consumer products, healthcare, music and fintech, from teams working on AI safety and personal computing to builders of autonomous robots for underground pipes and satellites that detect radio-frequency signals from orbit.

At least three of the companies had already raised outside funding before joining Surge, in some cases from Peak XV itself. Ditto, an AI matchmaker inside iMessage, announced a $9.2 million seed round led by Peak XV earlier this year, satellite maker ULOOK had raised about $2.3 million from growX Ventures and InfoEdge Ventures, and insurance brokerage Rosella about $2.5 million in pre-seed funding. Three further startups have not yet revealed their names or products.
From Sequoia India to Peak XV
Surge launched in 2019, when Peak XV operated as Sequoia Capital India and Southeast Asia. It has since backed more than 180 startups founded by entrepreneurs of more than 18 nationalities, and the ten largest companies to emerge from those cohorts now generate over $1 billion in combined annual revenue. Anandan described Surge as one way Peak XV invests at the seed stage, alongside its standard seed strategy; its founders are typically repeat entrepreneurs, experienced operators and specialized technical founders, and about 50%-60% of a typical cohort comes from operating roles at established technology companies.
