Gemini Live vs. ChatGPT Voice: which AI sounds more natural in conversation

Engadget's Calvin Wankhede compared OpenAI's ChatGPT Voice and Google's Gemini Live after two years of using both. Rather than benchmarks, he reports personal observations: ChatGPT Voice sounds more natural, while Gemini Live wins on links to Google's services.

Two different deliveries

Both respond in real time; the split is in the models, with ChatGPT on the GPT family and Google's chatbot on Gemini. The gap shows in delivery. ChatGPT Voice is far more expressive in word selection and uses the markers of human conversation, pretending to think with an "mhmm" and inserting mid-sentence stutters. Gemini Live sounds flatter because of tone and inflection, and some users dislike ChatGPT's exaggerated intonations.

Retrieval is where the two diverge most. Asked about a recent Gemini 3.8 Live release, Gemini Live answered from existing knowledge and said no such product existed, while ChatGPT Voice paused for a couple of seconds, searched the web and gave the correct answer. Gemini Live often needs an explicit request to research. Both switch languages on the fly, but for speed they run on less capable models, so neither matches its own text mode.

Free limits and camera input

Free plans allow only a few minutes of conversation before cutting access, since voice processing is far more demanding than text; paid plans raise the limit and unlock stronger models. The GPT-Live-1 mini on ChatGPT's free tier lacks the reasoning skills of the larger GPT-Live-1, Wankhede notes. ChatGPT Go costs $8 a month and Google's AI Plus $5, with a $20 tier above both. He prefers Google's plans because even the cheapest bundles 400GB of shareable cloud storage. Both accept camera input, but on ChatGPT access during voice chat sits behind the $20 tier.

Where Gemini Live has the edge

Google's hardware breadth favours Gemini Live: the assistant runs on the Google Home Speaker and reached older Nest Audio and Hub devices, though smart home use needs a $10 monthly Google Home Premium subscription. Through Personal Intelligence it can also look up emails, YouTube videos and Drive documents; asked about bills that month, it listed what it found in his Gmail inbox within seconds. ChatGPT cannot peer into a user's digital life or reach Google services such as Maps and YouTube.

Even so, Wankhede often picks ChatGPT Voice, because it sounds more natural to him. Since both are free to try, he suggests testing them before paying.
