Goldman Sachs Restricts AI Coding Tools to Engineers
Goldman Sachs has cut off most employees from advanced AI coding tools such as Anthropic's Claude Code and Microsoft's GitHub, limiting access to engineers after months of broader use by traders and bankers.
Goldman Sachs has cut off most employees from advanced AI coding tools such as Anthropic's Claude Code and Microsoft's GitHub, according to Bloomberg, citing internal guidelines from October. Only engineers can still use the tools, while traders and bankers who had spent months using them to monitor trading flows and create content have lost access. The rollback is reportedly causing frustration inside the firm.
Access limited after broader use
Traders and bankers had spent months using the tools to monitor trading flows and create content before the change. Now, only engineers retain access to the advanced AI coding tools, based on the reported internal guidelines from October.
Earlier praise for non-technical prototyping
Back in July, Goldman CIO Marco Argenti praised "vibe coding" by non-technical staff in an interview. In that earlier approach, a trader or someone in asset management would have an idea, build a quick prototype with AI, and then hand it off to an engineer to scale for production. That approach no longer appears to be the plan.
Company cites productivity and risk management
Bloomberg's report cites only a "variety of factors including productivity and risk management," according to Goldman spokesperson Nick Carcaterra. He added that the experimentation phase is over, and the firm is now limiting the tools to the people "who are best suited to leverage them for the long term."
