Google Brings More Personalized Gemini AI to Android Auto and Cars
Google is rolling out Personal Intelligence to Gemini in Android Auto and cars with Google built-in, letting the assistant pull information from Gmail, Calendar, Maps, Photos, YouTube, and Search while you drive.
Gemini AI Gets Personal in the Car
Google is bringing Personal Intelligence to Gemini AI in your car. With this update, Gemini in Android Auto and cars with Google built-in can tap into your information across Google apps, including Gmail, Calendar, Maps, Photos, YouTube, and Search.
What You Can Ask While Driving
Google says you can ask Gemini about your flight status if you are driving to the airport. The AI assistant can pull your flight details from a confirmation message in Gmail and then use that information to look up the status, including your flight gate and whether the flight is on time. You can also ask Gemini to "take me to my doctor's appointment" instead of pulling up directions manually, or ask it to "find the car wash from the photo I took last week and navigate there." Google says Gemini can also suggest dinner spots along your route, factoring in preferences and restrictions such as a vegetarian diet.
Opt-In Personalization
Google says it will connect your apps to Gemini only if you enable its Personal Intelligence setting. It will also share personalized responses only if you have your phone connected to your car. In cars with Google built-in, personal results appear only when a device is connected over Bluetooth, and you can turn the feature off in the in-car settings even if your phone has it enabled.
Personal Intelligence is off by default in the Gemini app. The controls sit under "Connected Apps" in the app's settings, where you can toggle Workspace, Search, Photos, and more. Google launched the feature at the start of the year as a paid option for Google AI Pro and Google AI Ultra subscribers, and it reached free accounts in March.
If you don't use Personal Intelligence, everything in the car still works: you can use navigation, listen to music, make calls, and ask questions, but the answers won't be tailored to you.
Rollout and Supported Vehicles
Google brought its Gemini assistant to Android Auto last year before rolling it out to cars with Google built-in in April 2026. Gemini has replaced Assistant on devices. Several carmakers, including Ford, GM, Honda, Nissan, Volvo, and Polestar, have shipped newer cars with Google built-in, which adds support for native Android apps.
Personal Intelligence is rolling out to Android Auto today, with support coming to cars with Google built-in in the coming months. Engadget reports that the Android Auto rollout is global, with the exception of Switzerland, the European Economic Area, the UK, and Nigeria.
