Xiaomi releases MiMo Code as open source under the MIT license

Xiaomi's MiMo team has published MiMo Code, a terminal-native AI coding assistant whose source code is now available under the MIT license. The project is built as a fork of OpenCode: it keeps the original's core capabilities — multiple providers, a text interface, LSP, MCP and plugins — and layers its own memory, context-management and autonomous-loop machinery on top.
What the assistant does
MiMoCode can read and write code, run commands, manage Git and use a memory system that preserves its understanding of a project across sessions. Installation is a single command — curl -fsSL https://mimo.xiaomi.com/install | bash on macOS and Linux, an equivalent PowerShell script on Windows, or the npm package @mimo-ai/cli. The first launch walks the user through configuration: the Xiaomi MiMo platform via OAuth, connecting a Codex account, importing existing authentication from Claude Code, catalog providers by API key, or any OpenAI-compatible endpoint.
Memory, context and subagents
Persistent memory is powered by SQLite FTS5 full-text search and split into four parts: project knowledge in MEMORY.md, automatic state snapshots in checkpoint.md, temporary notes in notes.md, and per-task progress logs. When a session resumes, that material is injected into context automatically, governed by a token budget and an importance ranking. As context approaches its limit the system rebuilds it from the latest checkpoint, and the /context-limit command lets a model compact earlier than its own window.
The primary agent can create subagents on demand; they share the current session context and can run in parallel. Three primary modes are available — build with full tool permissions, read-only plan, and the orchestration-oriented compose — switched with Tab. The /goal command sets a stopping condition for a session, and an independent judge model evaluates whether it has genuinely been satisfied.
Workflows and self-improvement
The team also documented four built-in workflows that run as deterministic JavaScript scripts in a sandboxed runtime: compose for a full development pipeline, deep-research for multi-source reports, fact-check for adversarial verification with a three-juror vote, and research-experiment for optimising a mechanically verifiable metric. The /dream command extracts persistent knowledge from recent session traces, while /distill turns repeated manual workflows into reusable skills, subagents or commands. Voice input is included, built on TenVAD and MiMo ASR.
The open-source release matters because MiMo Code competes directly with closed commercial coding assistants, and publishing the source lets developers inspect and modify the tool's behaviour. The license is accompanied by a separate use-restrictions document, and Xiaomi's own terms apply to services hosted on the MiMo platform.
