Mistral Previews 1-Trillion-Parameter 'Le Chonk' Model Trained on Nvidia GPUs in Europe
Mistral AI has launched a public preview of Mistral Large 4, a one-trillion-parameter open-weight model code-named Le Chonk, trained on 3,800 Nvidia Grace Blackwell GPUs in European data centers, with weights due October 27.
Mistral Large 4 Enters Public Preview
Mistral AI has launched a public preview of Mistral Large 4, a one-trillion-parameter multimodal model code-named "Le Chonk." The company says the model has 49 billion active parameters and is natively multimodal. Mistral claims it is the best open-weights model from the US or Europe on aggregated benchmarks, with state-of-the-art results on workloads including cyber defense, manufacturing, and finance, and that it surpasses closed frontier models on visual grounding.
According to Mistral, the model was trained "from scratch" using 3,800 Nvidia Grace Blackwell GPUs in its data centers in Europe, including its cluster in Bruyères-le-Châtel built with Series B funding. Much of the training data was multilingual. The company says Series C and D clusters will come online soon, allowing longer training, more ambitious post-training, and faster iteration. The open-weight release is planned for October 27.
Benchmarks and Reception
Artificial Analysis scored the preview 38 on its Intelligence Index, calling it the most intelligent model from outside the US and China, with results comparable to DeepSeek V4.1 Flash. On a cybersecurity test that asks a model to reproduce a real vulnerability in open-source software and then patch it, ML4 scores 82%, reported as the highest of any model. The model is also available in Agent Arena for evaluation on real-world, long-horizon agentic tasks.
